Empathy, Mirror Neurons, and the Impact of Global News

In a world where headlines change by the minute and global crises dominate our feeds, empathy has never been more essential. It also never been more challenged!

Neuroscience tells us that our brains are wired for connection. Mirror neurons are specialised cells that fire both when we act and when we observe others. They help us to instinctively understand and relate to the experiences of people around us. They are the neurological foundation of empathy.

But with the constant flood of distressing news from around the world, many of us are experiencing something called compassion fatigue. This is when repeated exposure to others' suffering starts to dull our emotional responses. Our mirror neurons don’t shut off, but they can become overwhelmed or desensitised. This is a protection mechanism, but does not always serve us well in terms on continuing to make a positive impact despite the noise.

So how do we stay connected and compassionate without burning out?

It starts with intentional empathy. Taking a moment to really see someone else’s experience beyond the headline. Seeking out diverse voices. Listening instead of scrolling past. Giving ourselves permission to feel, and to act when we can, rather than retreat into numbness. The key is to do what we can, not to do it all (unless we can!).

Empathy is a muscle we have to exercise. And in times of conflict, crisis, or division, it's not just a personal strength; it's a professional and societal imperative.

Let’s use the science of connection to guide how we show up for our colleagues, our communities, and our world. We’re all wired for empathy. It’s already within us.

If you feel you are overwhelmed or in a state of compassion fatigue, reach out to me. I’ve been swaying back and forth between these feelings for quite some time and maybe I can share something with you that may support you to avoid burnout and boost your capacity and energy to stay on track.
